Housing and Care Requirements

As a bottom-dwelling species, Hastatus Cories require a smooth sand or fine gravel substrate to feel secure. A 10-20 gallon aquarium provides enough swimming space for a group. Add driftwood, plants and cave-like decor for hiding spots.

Perform partial water changes 1-2 times per week to maintain water quality. These fish are not jumpers but a tight-fitting lid is still recommended. Their barbels help them “taste” for food scraps, making regular vacuuming unnecessary when kept with clean tankmates.

Feeding Your Hastatus Cory Catfish

Offer a varied, balanced diet including algae tablets or wafers, high-quality flakes and occasional bloodworms or brine shrimp as a treat. Hastatus Cories will also graze on aufwuchs algae growing on surfaces. Feed them small amounts 2-3 times daily and remove any uneaten food to avoid water pollution.

Some great community-friendly species to house with Hastatus Cories include Ember Tetras, Chili Rasboras, Dwarf Shrimp and Otocinclus Catfish. Other nano fish and invertebrates 1 inch or under also make suitable tankmates. Avoid overly-aggressive or large specimens that may chase or nip at the tiny corydoras.

 

Stability is key – choose docile species that school/shoal for a more natural environment. Regular water changes and habitat maintenance will also help reduce stress and competition in the tank.
